You no longer have to decide whether you prefer a Porsche with automatic or manual transmission at the time of purchase. Now, you can make that decision at the wheel. Equipped with the new five-speed Tiptronic S system, the full privileges of driving a Porsche can be communicated with the fun and immediacy of manual shifting or the convenience of automatic driving. Allowing you to moderate your spirited conversation with the road any way you choose.
As mindful as the gearbox is of your driving habits, it also has a mind of its own. A special warm-up program raises the shift point rpms at startup, enabling the catalytic converters to reach their peak operating temperatures rapidly for more efficient emissions control.
The system also pays close attention to the demands of the road, selecting the gear best-suited for conditions such as uphill or downhill driving. Decelerate into a corner, and the transmission downshifts, instantly hitting the correct gear for powering out of the turn. Under high cornering loads, Tiptronic-S holds the gear to prevent mid-corner shifts that might upset the Boxster's keen sense of balance. Downshifts resulting in over-revving are also prevented, yielding to a survival instinct that is, perhaps, the highest order of intelligence.

In automatic mode,
Tiptronic-S intuitively selects one of five shifting programs - ranging from an economical program for leisurely driving to a sport program for maximum acceleration and performance - based on the objectives your right foot sets as it works the throttle. In no time, you'll develop a feel for the system and find yourself using the accelerator to influence gear changes.

In manual mode
|
Tip the shift lever into the manual slot,
and the clutchless-shifting benefits of Formula One racing are instantly transferred to your fingertips. Rocker switches on either side of the steering wheel let you determine the shift points, allowing you to shift gears in .2 second while keeping both hands firmly in control of the steering wheel. An electronic monitoring device makes it impossible to miss a gear change, while Porsche's advanced engine management adjusts power output to smooth out shifts while pouring an uninterrupted supply of power onto the pavement.
